In our new Kingdom, the Stuarts were keen to develop the arts and the sciences, so it is perhaps unsurprising that the period nurtured the likes of Shakespeare, Robert Hooke and Sir Isaac Newton. During this period, Europe was experiencing a transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The Stuarts had ruled Scotland since 1371, and continued to rule the new Kingdom until 1714. At this point, Elizabeth I, and the Tudor period was succeeded by the house of Stuart where an act of union created the Kingdom of Great Britain. ![]() Henry Tudor's victory over King William III led to a period of relative stability, where three Kings and two Queens reigned until 1603. The Tudor period began in 1485, following the final battle of the Wars of the Roses, which had been fought during the Plantagenet period between the house of York and the Lancastrians.
